At the end of every trip you're left with vivid memories, emotions and... lots of footage! GNARBOX was created precisely to make it faster and easier for you to get content published in high resolution. Whether it be through a text, social media platform or video streaming service there are always best practices for export resolutions.

In this guide we have compiled information for the preferred outlets of GNARBOX users. These guidelines apply beyond GNARBOX users and can be referenced for other video editors, but it is catered to the GNARBOX use case. We will cover:

  • GNARBOX best practices for video exporting
  • Facebook: Video resolutions from your phone and computer
  • Instagram: Video resolutions
  • Youtube: The best way to upload from your phone to Youtube
  • Vimeo: The best way to upload from your phone to Vimeo
  • Texting, Camera Roll & E-mail

GNARBOX Best Practices

TL/DR:

  • Highlight reel export options of 720p, 1080p, 2.7k & 4k
  • All exports are in 16:9 (no cropping)
  • Limited to 4GB exports
  • Adjustable export bitrate between 10 and 65Mbps in the Settings menu
  • All highlight reel exports are 29.97fps
  • Exporting a raw video (no Reel) will keep original resolution

When you are utilizing the GNARBOX for mobile editing you will always have the option to export in 720p, 1080p, 2.7k and 4k all in 16:9 aspect ratios no matter the input of the videos being used. The GNARBOX will never crop your videos, but will always form fit the resolution to a 16:9 aspect ratio (i.e. a 1440p video will be transformed to fit the resolution rather than cutting portions of your video). Typically, sharing platforms prefer 1080p, though more and more platforms are beginning to accept and display 2.7k and 4k video.

Pre-trim: If you are importing from a card onto the GNARBOX, you are able to pre-trim the video. This will not change the original clip or alter the resolution of the video.  It simply saves a portion of the clip.

Exporting a raw video: If you choose to export a single clip, the video will export in its original resolution.  Note: if your phone is not compatible with the resolution or filetype of the video it will not save. One we are well aware of is DJI's 4K videos not saving to iPhone 6.

Facebook: Video resolutions from your phone and computer

The first thing you need to do is make sure you've enabled "Upload HD" in the application settings. Here's a great guide on how to do that via the app or computer.

Facebook places a heavier restriction on file sizes when uploading from a mobile device versus a computer. It is important to note that if your file exceeds 1GB you should transfer it to a computer environment to prevent compression and down-resolution. This can happen to any video stored on your mobile device - not just GNARBOX videos.  That being said, GNARBOX videos tend to be higher quality videos which can output to greater file sizes.

Instagram: Video resolutions

Instagram requires that video sizes do not exceed 4GB.  In addition, files must be 1080p or less.  Higher resolutions will cause the application to crash.

Youtube:  The best way to upload from your phone to Youtube

We recommend using the Youtube Capture app to help manage your uploads. Youtube will accept 4K and 2.7k uploads though 2.7k playback is actually 2560x1440. Keeping your videos to 1080p will save time. If you want to upload in higher resolutions expect longer hold times on your phone. You can always plug your GNARBOX into your laptop (in Mass Storage mode) and upload via the web to ensure the highest quality. All GNARBOX exports from the 'Highlight Reel' are at 29.97fps.

Vimeo: The best way to upload from your phone to Vimeo

We recommend the Vimeo app for uploading to their platform.  Keeping your file to 1080p will save time. If you want to upload your video in higher resolutions, expect longer hold times on your phone. You can always plug your GNARBOX into your laptop (in Mass Storage mode) and upload via the web to ensure the highest quality.

Texting, Camera Roll & E-mail

GNARBOX allows you to export files directly to your camera roll.  To learn how to export your Highlight Reel, check out our full tutorial in this article.

If necessary, the GNARBOX will automatically conform your video where possible to be compatible with your mobile device. If you experience any issues with your export, make sure you have enough space on your phone to save the file.

From your camera roll you can text, e-mail or upload your file.

How do I change the bitrate, frame-rate and/or ratio of my Highlight reels?

Bitrate is now adjustable for exporting trimmed videos and Highlight Reels! You can adjust your bitrate in the Settings menu. Keep in mind that untrimmed original clips will still export at their original bitrate. Check out our article on Bitrate Configuration settings for more information!
