Advice and answers from the GNARBOX Team

"If you are getting rad and no one is around to see it…are you really getting rad?"
~ G.N.A.R.

At the end of every trip, experience and adventure you're left with vivid memories, emotions and... lots of footage! GNARBOX was created precisely to make it faster and easier for you to get MORE content published in FULL RESOLUTION to share with friends and family. Whether it be through a text, social media platform or upload to video streaming services there is always a BEST PRACTICE for the resolutions you should export in.

In this guide we have compiled information of best practices for the preferred outlets of GNARBOX users. These guidelines apply beyond GNARBOX users and can be referenced for other video editors, but it is catered to the GNARBOX use case. We will cover:

  • GNARBOX best practices for video exporting
  • Facebook: Video resolutions from your phone and computer
  • Instagram: Video resolutions that will upload
  • Youtube: How to best upload from your phone to youtube
  • Vimeo: How to best upload from your phone to vimeo
  • Texting, Camera Roll & E-mail

GNARBOX Best Practices

TL/DR:

  • Highlight reel export options of 720p, 1080p, 2.7k & 4k
  • All exports are in 16:9 (no cropping)
  • Limited to 4GB exports
  • Average bitrate of 60Mbps
  • All highlight reel exports are 29.97fps
  • Exporting a raw video (no Reel) will keep original resolution

When you are utilizing the GNARBOX for mobile editing you will always have the options to export in 720p, 1080p, 2.7k and 4k all in 16:9 aspect ratios no matter the input of the videos being used. It will never crop your videos but always form fit the 16:9 aspect ratio (i.e. a 1440p video will be transformed to fit the resolution rather than cutting portions of your video). Typical exports for sharing platforms are 1080p though more and more are beginning to accept and display 2.7k and 4k video.

Pre-trim: If you are importing from a card onto the GNARBOX you are able to pre-trim the video to save size on your GNARBOX. This will not change the original clip at all and it also will not alter the resolution of the video, merely save a portion of the clip.

Exporting a raw video: If you select a video and share it without building a Highlight reel it will export in the original resolution. WARNING- if your phone is not compatible with the resolution or filetype of the video it WILL NOT SAVE. One we are well aware of is DJI's 4K videos not saving to iPhone 6.

Facebook: Video resolutions from your phone and computer

The first thing you need to do is make sure you've enabled Uploading in HD on the applications settings. Here's a great guide on how to do that from both your phone's settings menu and in app.

Facebook more greatly restricts the file sizes and uploads when posting from a mobile device than when posting from a computer. It is important that if your file begins to exceed 1 GB that you move to a laptop environment to avoid compression and down resolution. This applies to ANY video on your phone's camera roll and not just GNARBOX videos, though ours tend to be higher quality and therefore greater file sizes.

Instagram: Video resolutions that will upload

You must keep your file size under 4GB and it must be 1080p or less. Anything else will crash the application.

Youtube:  How to best upload from your phone to Youtube

We recommend using the Youtube Capture app to help you manage your uploads. Youtube will accept 4K and 2.7k uploads though 2.7k playback is actually 2560x1440. Keeping your videos to 1080p will save time. If you want to upload in higher resolutions expect longer hold times on your phone. You can always plug your GNARBOX into your laptop (in Mass Storage mode) and upload via the web upload to insure the highest quality. All GNARBOX exports from the 'Highlight Reel' are at 29.97fps.

Vimeo: How to best upload from your phone to Vimeo

We recommend the Vmeo application for uploading and keeping it to 1080p to save time. If you want to upload in higher resolutions expect longer hold times on your phone. You can always plug your GNARBOX into your laptop (in Mass Storage mode) and upload via the web upload to insure the highest quality.

Texting, Camera Roll & E-mail

GNARBOX allows you to export directly to your camera roll using 'GNARDROP'. You can see the progress of your save in the Task Manager. Do not disconnect from the Application while doing this. It is transferring over the WiFi connection between your phone and GNARBOX so do not disconnect from the GNARBOX or power down the GNARBOX. You can still operate your phone though may need to re-enter the app to finalize the transfer (it won't leave progress and will continue what it can in the background). The GNARBOX will conform your videos where possible to your camera and camera rolls settings. If you are experiencing issues, make sure you have enough space on your phone to receive the file. You can see the file size at the top of the screen on the file. From your camera roll you can text, e-mail or upload at your will!

How do I change the bitrate, frame-rate and/or ratio of my Highlight reels?

Currently you are unable to do this. Message us with suggestions and use cases though! We'd love to hear more about your needs and desires in the department of transcoding and exporting.
