Whether you're traveling, at a remote destination, or simply sitting on your couch, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of the internal battery in your GNARBOX. 

Here are some of our tips for maximizing your battery usage:

  • External hard drives pull a great deal of power from the GNARBOX.  We recommend only using them during transfer and then promptly ejecting when done.
  • If you don't intend on immediately editing your videos, be sure to power the GNARBOX off after video import.  This prevents the GNARBOX from spending time (and battery) transcoding the video files.
  • Charging other devices off of the GNARBOX (ie: your phone) will drain the battery faster.
  • If you're editing on your GNARBOX and you're near a power source, it's totally fine to charge the GNARBOX while editing.  Just make sure you unplug it from the power source before doing any file transfers, exports or before plugging in an external hard drive. 
  • HDD's pull more power from the GNARBOX than SDD's, so using HDD's will drain your battery faster than SDD's.**

 ** = HDD refers to spinning disk drives, while SDD refers to solid state drives (non-spinning hard drives).

It may also be helpful to note the most power consuming activities which include:

  • transfers / exports
  • utilizing an external hard drive
  • transcoding video

The chart below maps out the results of a battery draining test we created in our office.  This should help give you an understanding of recharge and draining speeds across different activities and voltages.

Battery Troubleshooting

In some cases where a firmware update fails or a GNARBOX has not been utilized frequently, the battery can appear to be non-responsive.  This usually means the battery needs a little kick to get up and running again.

Here are two useful troubleshooting methods should you run into this scenario:

Method #1:  A hard battery reset

A hard reset is sometimes needed when other troubleshooting options haven't helped solve the issue with your GNARBOX. Note that a hard set will NOT erase data on your GNARBOX. A hard reset will simply disconnect and then reconnect the battery. It will never harm any of the files on your GNARBOX or otherwise reset the operating system or software. If you would like to perform a full factory reset of your GNARBOX, please contact support via our live chat or at support@gnarbox.com

  1. Power your GNARBOX on. If your GNARBOX will not power on, plug it in to charge for a few hours and then proceed to Step Two. 
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. All LEDs will turn off.
  3. Keep holding the power button for another 30-45 seconds
  4. A turquoise LED will come on, then shut off
  5. Reset is complete and you can power on as normal

Method #2: 48hr charge

Charging your GNARBOX for 48hrs can usually give your battery the kick that it needs.  If it's been a while since you've powered your GNARBOX on or if your GNARBOX just doesn't seem to want to power up, give it a full 48hr charge to restore the battery.
