We are beyond excited to share Release 1.6.0 -- our very first collaboration with Adobe and a more streamlined way to import photos into 3rd party apps!  The new iOS 11 Files App allows your iOS device wireless access to the files stored on your GNARBOX and any connected devices.   You will also have direct access to any cloud integration services you may be using, such as Dropbox, iCloud or Google Drive.

This update gives you a more efficient way to import photos into 3rd party editing apps, such as Adobe Lightroom Mobile, for a more desired professional editing workflow.  While we highly recommend Lightroom Mobile, we are happy to extend this function to your favorite editing apps that utilize the Files App.  Experiment with color, adjust clarity, and add vignettes to perfect your images. All without a laptop!

In order to use the Files App, you will need:

  • iOS 11
  • GNARBOX Firmware and App versions 1.6.0

This article will cover:

  • How to use the iOS 11 Files App with your GNARBOX
  • iOS 11 Lightroom Mobile Workflow
  • iOS 11 Snapseed Workflow
  • Important Notes
  • File Type Support Information
  • Potential Workflow Limitations and/or Workarounds

HOW TO USE iOS 11 FILES APP TO VIEW FILES ON YOUR GNARBOX

  • Connect to your GNARBOX as you normally would by powering it up and connecting to the WiFi.
  • Once connected, go back to your iOS home screen and open up the Files App. You’ll see a folder labeled ‘GNARBOX’.  Inside that folder, you’ll find the contents of your GNARBOX in addition to a ‘Favorites’ folder, which accumulates files based on the images that you’ve favorited in the GNARBOX app.
  • From here, you’ll immediately notice that the workflow possibilities are potentially endless.  You can batch select files and export to a Cloud service, share files to social media, or select files one-by-one for importing to your favorite photo editing app.  You can even copy files from a Cloud service over to the GNARBOX!

NOTE: Once more apps become integrated with iOS 11, you’ll see new workflow possibilities open up.

iOS 11 LIGHTROOM MOBILE WORKFLOW

Please note that you will need Lightroom Mobile 3.0 in order to import files from your GNARBOX.  This workflow will not work with previous versions of Lightroom Mobile.

  • Connect to your GNARBOX as you normally would by powering it up and connecting to the WiFi.
  • Once connected, open the Lightroom Mobile App.
  • Select an existing album or create a new album.  NOTE: you are only able to import photos from the GNARBOX from within an album.
  • Select the import button in the bottom right corner.  Then select ‘Files’.  Tap ‘GNARBOX’ to view the contents of your box and any connected external storage devices.  TIP: favorite files on the GNARBOX to import them easily from the ‘Favorites’ folder into Lightroom Mobile.
  • After a short wait, the photo will be available for editing in Lightroom Mobile. NOTE: Lightroom will place a “RAW” banner at the top right corner of an image thumbnail to note when you’ve imported a RAW file.
  • Tap on the photo thumbnail to make edits, then edit away!
  • When you’re ready to export your photo tap the ‘Export’ icon in the top right. You’ll notice that you have a few options: Share to social media, Save to Camera Roll, Save to Files (GNARBOX and external storage devices)

iOS 11 SNAPSEED WORKFLOW

  • Connect to your GNARBOX as you normally would by powering it up and connecting to the WiFi.
  • Once connected, go back to your iOS home screen and open up the Files App.  You’ll see a folder labeled ‘GNARBOX’.  Inside that folder, you’ll find the contents of your GNARBOX in addition to a ‘Favorites’ folder, which accumulates files based on the images that you’ve favorited in the GNARBOX app.
  • Tap “Select” in the upper right-hand corner and select the file you wish to edit.  Then select the “Export” icon in the lower left-hand corner.  Select “Copy to Snapseed” in the list of available apps.  NOTE: you may need to scroll to the right in order to find Snapseed.
  • Snapseed will then automatically open and import your photo!
  • When you are ready to export your photo tap the ‘Export’ option and choose your desired output.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • There is currently no batch import for Lightroom Mobile.  You will need to import one file at a time.  This is something Adobe is actively looking to fix with Apple.
  • You are able to backup files from your GNARBOX to a cloud service such as Dropbox or Google Drive.  In addition, you can move files from a cloud service to your GNARBOX.
  • If you have automatic sync enabled to your Creative Cloud account, your album/workspace in Lightroom Mobile will automatically sync to Lightroom CC on your computer.
  • For Android users: it is definitely the long term goal to get Android set up with Lightroom Mobile integration!  We were happy to have an opportunity to get our foot in the door with Adobe, learn from their team, and start building in that direction.  They wanted to pursue iOS first with the implementation of the new Files App so we went in that direction with them.

FILE TYPE SUPPORT

Tested image file types that will not transfer to the Files App and/or import to Lightroom Mobile via Camera Roll:

  • GoPro RAW (.gpr)
  • Hasselblad (.fff)
  • Leica C Type 112 (.rwl)
  • Phase One (.IIQ or .eip)
  • .TIF files

If you need a file tested, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email at support@gnarbox.com with a sample file, or message us directly at gnarbox.com via our Live Chat Support.

POTENTIAL WORKFLOW LIMITATIONS AND/OR WORKAROUNDS

Adobe does not yet allow for presets in Lightroom CC to be accessible in Lightroom Mobile.  However, there is a workaround for preset users that requires some planning beforehand.  Here are the steps:

  • In Lightroom CC on your computer, process a photo with your favorite preset.  If you want to transfer multiple presets to Lightroom Mobile, be sure to process several different photos using every preset you wish to transfer on a different photo.
  • Place all processed photos in a separate collection and sync the collection with Lightroom Mobile.
  • Once you open the Lightroom Mobile app, you’ll be able to copy and paste your desired presets to your photos.
